Forecast Publication
2024
The Forecast Publication is the culmination of the Vegetal Encounters Residency with the UBC Outdoor Art Program, Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery.
During Holly Schmidt’s five-year residency with the Belkin, she created Forecast (2019–23), a series of short poetic texts using the language of weather reporting to reflect on environmental changes. These reflective mirror-finish texts, applied to various campus architectural glazing, interact with the environment, highlighting weather and seasonal impacts on campus ecology. Initially installed on the AHVA Gallery windows, Forecast has also appeared on the clerestory windows of the Belkin and the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS). Schmidt’s work explores human-nature relationships through site-specific public projects and material experiments.
Designed and co-published by Information Office and the Belkin Art Gallery, Forecast includes writing by the artist alongside essays from Barbara Cole, Bopha Chhay, Melanie O’Brian and Sheryda Warrener.
